Photoshop: Resampling

Question: What does re sampling mean? What does it do?

Resampling is the changing of the resolution of the imaage by decreasing or increasing the number of pixels which make up the image. It should not be confused with the resolution change which occurs when one changes the size of the image while keeping the total number of pixels constant.

The Image > Image Size dialog has a check box labeled "Resample Image". When this box is checked a change in the image size will be accompanied by a change in the total number of pixels, keeping the resolution (in ppi) constant. Generally not recommended when you are increasing the image size, but OK if you are making image smaller.

Photoshop: Brush Tool and Color Overlap

Question: I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. When I select the brush tool and try to color something it works fine, however, when I stop coloring and let up on the mouse and start to color again, the mouse moves into an already colored section and makes the overlap darker. Everytime I color in an already colored spot it makes it darker yet. My layer is on multiply but it does it in normal mode also. Is everything ok or am I doing something wrong.

Answer: The brush behaviour you're describing is normal. That's the way painting with the brush works; it's as if you are applying a second coat of paint. You just have to avoid overlapping. If anyone knows a way to avoid this happening, I would be very interested to know about it.

Javascript: Message Hover

I have some words that need defining within a site. I don't want to open up a new window for this but need something that, when mouseOver the text a box opens up over the word or above it that gives the definition. It would be great if some of the words in the definition could be bold or italic.

There's another method as well which I've seen. Many of the variables (dimensions, colors, placement) can be changed to suit your needs.

Other than the behaviors in Dreamweaver that are for 'popup message'. I have some words that need defining within a site. I don't want to open up a new window for this but need something that, when mouseOver the text a box opens up over the word or above it that gives the definition. It would be great if some of the words in the definition could be bold or italic.

Here's some good info .

Coldfusion: Session Question

Question: I am having a problem with my site, whenever I login after 20 minutes my session expires eventhough I have set the session expiration time to 60 minutes. The Coldfusion server has a 20 minute limit for session expiration. I know due to this my session gone be expire. Can I solve this problem?

Answer: You can't set a session timeout longer than your server's session timeout. Well you can, but it will still timeout at the server's setting. One way around it is to develop a "remember me"-style functionality with cookies.

ColdFusion: Group By

The following code produces groupings by Division, with the given Division as a label for the group. However, each group contains ALL the employees, regardless of the Division they are in. What do I have to do to have only employees in the given Division listed under that Division?

<cfif #Division# EQ "#Division#">#Division#<br>
<cfloop query="ThirtyYearAwards">#FirstName# #MiddleName# #LastName# #Division#'<br>
</cfloop>
</cfif><br/>
</cfoutput>

I would greatly appreciate your help. :-)

You'll want to use the "group" attribute of cfoutput.

<cfoutput query="ThirtyYearAwards" group="Division">#Division#<br/>
<cfoutput>
#FirstName# #MiddleName# #LastName#<br/>
</cfoutput>
</cfoutput>

Photoshop: Darkening the Photo

Question: I recently took a picture at a wrestling event. I seem to have captured many other flashes. Is there a good way to darken out the flashes?

Answer: You can do some curve adjustments, and duplicate the layer and make the new one a blend mode of Multiply.

I tried adjusting that image, but the result was only marginal. There is too much detail lost, however I'm sure you have a higher resolution image, so you result may be a little better. If you want to put the high-res image in the files section, I could try it with that one.

Note: This is one of the advantages of shooting RAW. You would have a much better chance of recovering this image, if it was in RAW mode.

You might try a technique known as contrast masking. It is quite simple and goes as follows:

1. Duplicate the background layer. Rename it contrast mask.
2. Select the duplicated (contrast mask) layer and
3. Image > Adjust > Desaturate then Image > Adjust > Invert.
4. Double click on the contrast mask layer and in the dialog box select Overlay as the Mode. Click OK
5. Apply a 4-6 pixel Gaussian blur to the mask (Filter > Blur > Gaussian)

That's it. I tried it on the image in your folder and it seemed to improve it somewhat, but it was so pixillated it was hard to be sure.

Web Font Types?

I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a good resource online dealing with font types?

Try this for a start: http://www.visibone.com/font/FontResults.html

Of course, the font types and groups are limited online. Ideally, I'm looking for something that shows what the font looks like and says what it's name is, such as Verdana, Arial, etc. The fonts that are set up to choose from in Dreamweaver are very limited.

One more quick note - I strongly recommend that you use Firefox to browse for free fonts. In my experience, all of those sites innundate you with pop-ups if you're on IE.
